The best leaders have transitioned from prioritizing someone’s competency over their character.  However, in this heads down world we can get so focused on the project metrics that we lose touch with the people who are doing the work.  Great leaders make a habit to check in with the person first before they ask where we are on the project.  This Forbes Council Post is a great reminder:

“I’m sure if I asked you about the first time you knew you were good at something, a poignant memory would come to mind. Perhaps it was a time that a coach or teacher complimented you on something you were just starting to learn: “Wow, you’re picking this up fast!” Or a time when a friend noticed you were head and shoulders above the rest of the class.”
