For the last 20 years in leadership we have so overvalued collaboration that we have forgotten that sometimes directive leadership is by far the best style for the situation.  What is also clear is that too much directive leadership and not enough personal development and empowerment is bad for the person and the organization.  This Forbes post is well worth your time:
