I have always associated too much stress as the primary cause for burnout.  Stress can be the problem but there is so much more involved when you actually reach burnout.  Burnout is an absolute loss of margin in every major area of your life and cannot be resolved over a two day weekend.  This post by Annie McKee gives us some reasons and suggestions for help:
