Empowerment is a hot topic for most organizations and their workforce. It increases trust across the board and significantly improves the capacity of the teams to do more work effectively. However, if it becomes another branding trick to simply get more work done without investing in your people it can backfire. This HBR post is well worth the read:

Many leaders today often try to empower their employees by delegating authority and decision-making, sharing information, and asking for their input. Because of Dan’s leadership training experience and keen sense of leadership attributes, others on the leadership team became interested in furthering their own personal development. As a result, over the course of two years Dan developed coaching relationships with all members of the leadership team. In addition, Dan led several team-building exercises, including homework reading assignments, general instruction and individual consultations. Dan also became involved with the succession planning process where he consulted with leadership team members in developing their succession plans.

He also did an excellent job speaking at one of our annual leadership development events during an offsite summit. Leadership team members benefited individually in professional development and the organization became more effective. Much less energy was devoted to non-productive interaction, resulting in better and more expedient decision making.

In summary, during a two year period, Dan led the leadership team through multiple dimensions of leadership development, including team building, succession planning and personal professional development of each member.
