Average is dead and according to Jim Collins even Good is the enemy of the Great.  So unless you are striving for compelling you are not going to be able to compete personally or organizationally. On the other hand if you are willing to pay the price to be remarkable then everyone will notice for all the right reasons.  Brad Lomenick practices what he preaches from my experience:
